The Swamp Kings

The Swamp Kings live and play by one motto: Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler! While bringing New Orleans Funk and Cajun Boogie up the Mississippi River to their home of Minnesota, the band has captured a unique fan base playing clubs, festivals and events since 2006. The Swamp Kings style is rhythmic, energetic and raw–bleeding Cajun, Funk, Blues and Zydeco. Soulful vocals, swampy guitar, spicy accordion and just the right amount of heat from the rhythm section make the perfect ingredients for good times. Tom Harkness I Guitar, Vocals and Songwriter

Tom Harkness has been performing live music most of his life. His vocal and guitar styles are described as rhythmic, raw and energetic. An accomplished Trumpet and Guitar player by his early twenties and a passion for Blues, Cajun, Zydeco and New Orleans style music has brought him well over one thousand performances in a wide variety of venues and festivals in the upper Midwest over the last 30 years. In 2005 he started up The Swamp Kings Band and still performs regularly with this band in clubs and festivals. His latest venture, The Tom Harkness Project is a collaboration of top regional musicians performing various ensembles and music styles in popular music venues.

Tom released “Swamp Appeal”, The Swamp Kings first CD in 2010 and gained international airplay on Blues and Zydeco radio stations. His song “Momma’s Cajun Food” was featured on Big City Rhythm and Blues Magazine’s CD Sampler Number 8. He continues to write and perform original Blues, Cajun and New Orleans style music. Tom is also the guitarist in The Johnny Mac Blues Band and hosts 2 weekly Minneapolis Blues jams.

Steve Dancin’ Hansen I Bass & Vocals

Steve Dancin’ Hansen has been a fixture on the upper Midwest music scene since the mid 80’s holding down the bottom end for many bands playing many styles. He toured nationally with the Sena Ehrhardt Band and appeared on their 2011 Blues Music Award nominated album Leave the Light On. He has enjoyed playing everything from small, smoke-filled bars to large outdoor festivals with equal enthusiasm. Festival highlights include Fargo Blues Fest, Steel Stacks Muzikfest, Smokin’ in Steele, Prairie Dog Blues Fest, Down by the Riverside and Famous Dave’s Blues Fest.

Scott Kovar I Drums & Cymbals

Scott Kovar is an active drummer, percussionist and music educator. He is the owner of Scott Kovar’s Drum Studio in Rochester and percussion teacher at Universal Music Center in Red Wing.

Scott was born and raised in Chicago. Aspiring to be a musician at an early age he was fortunate to grow up in the Windy City. Blues, Rock, Soul, and Jazz were major influences in his early musical education.

After High School he pursued a formal music education. While leading his own band he studied percussion at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb Il. This gave him some real world experience making a living as a musician while playing and paying his way through school.

After he received his Bachelors of Music in Percussion he continued to lead his own band, freelance and teach. He has also worked in other avenues of the music business. There include music retail, and instrument repair at various music stores in Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Scott stays busy and has the privilege of performing with talented musicians and bands though out the region.

Mick Zampogna I Keys & Accordion

Mick Zampogna is a seasoned keyboard player who has performed with artists from the east coast to Minneapolis. His style is heavily influenced with 10 years of performing in Detroit clubs absorbing Motown soul and a mixture of music from Chicago to New Orleans. Mick has taken these varied regional styles and over the years has developed a New Orleans blend of Jazz, Blues and Funk. Early artists such as Fats Domino and Professor Longhair can be heard in his style.
